About

Summer Blooms is a women’s chamber ensemble based in Moorhead, Minnesota, serving the broader Fargo-Moorhead area. We are dedicated to expressive, high-quality music-making in a small ensemble setting where each voice is heard and each singer carries meaningful musical responsibility.

“I believe that music is one of the most beautiful forms of communication.”

Kay Beckermann, Pianist

The ensemble began in the summer of 2025, when women from Fargo-Moorhead Choral Artists continued gathering during the break to sing, listen, and share life together. What began as a seasonal circle gradually became a committed ensemble, carrying that work into the fall with regular rehearsals, growing trust, and a deepening artistic focus.

Our early offerings focused on sacred repertoire, including “Veni, Creator Spiritus” by Berlioz, “O Jesu So Sweet” by Bach, and “Ave Maria” by Gabrieli. We have sung these pieces in religious services, including at the newly built NDSU Newman Center, and those experiences shaped our sense of purpose: to offer music with reverence, honesty, and depth.

As the ensemble grew and welcomed a pianist, our repertoire broadened into secular works — some playful and spirited, others peaceful, reflective, and contemplative. Our Spring 2026 program, Listen to the Wind, brought together close-harmony humor, folk song, poetry, nature-centered reflection, piano miniatures, and our signature ballad “Summer Blooms”, inviting singers to move between precision, expressiveness, and close collaboration.

“For me, music is like meditation; it’s my escape from this world.”

June Stein, Founding Singer

We are drawn to music that invites careful listening, expressive nuance, and musical connection, whether sung a cappella or with piano. Because Summer Blooms is a small ensemble, our work depends on musical self-sufficiency, attentive listening, and shared commitment. We value singers who bring both skill and openness: the ability to carry an individual part, respond thoughtfully in rehearsal, and help shape a unified ensemble sound.

At the same time, Summer Blooms remains rooted in warmth and connection. Each rehearsal begins with a short tea time, giving singers space for friendship, conversation, and the human relationships that allow honest music-making to grow.

“Summer Blooms is a dream I didn’t know I had that grew out of friendship and love of music.”

Oksana Bihun, Artistic Director

Summer Blooms performs for audiences who love choral and chamber music and value musical experiences that are refined, sincere, and deeply human. We invite listeners into fully present listening: a place to set down burdens, breathe, and return to what is steadying, meaningful, and beautiful.
